Del Combs was born on his grandmother's cattle ranch in the mountains of Idaho. His family later moved to Eastern Oregon where Del attended a one-room school. In 1949, Del moved to Douglas County, eventually leading up the Sheriff's Posse for search and rescue for missing hikers while maintaining his own small parcel of land with his horses, cows and chickens.
